Do you know hand tied weft extensions?

hand tied weft extensionsHair extensions offer so much versatility. You can try different lengths, hair colors, and styles at the drop of a bundle. Aside from varying hair options, there are also many different techniques used to install extensions. Some of the most common practices are clip-ins and sew-ins, but another popular method stylists are using in salons is hand-tied hair extensions. If you're fascinated by intricate beauty techniques, you may have already spent some time scrolling through videos to see the satisfying hand-tied extension technique.
Hand-tied weft hair extensions meticulously involve the individual attachment of each hair strand to a base, secured by hand-tied knots. This artisanal technique yields extensions that are not only incredibly durable but also characterized by fine, delicate wefts. Consequently, these extensions are especially well-suited for those with thin or fine hair, providing a natural and seamless look while adding volume and length without weighing down the hair.
Hand-tied weft is ideal for those looking to add more volume and length that looks natural without putting too much tension on the scalp or hair.

They stay firmly in place, preventing root sagging or hair deformation, and enabling individuals with all hair types to enjoy enhanced volume, length, and beauty.

Cons:

Have return hair

The return hair of the hand-braided weft may cause hair irritation, especially for people with sensitive scalps.

Can not be cut

The hand-knotted structure makes hand-tied weft extensions impossible to cut it at will, as trimming the weft directly risks unraveling knots and releasing more strands. Unlike machine-weft extensions, hand-tied wefts cannot be easily adjusted at home; even minor cuts can compromise the weft’s integrity. This forces users to rely on professionals for careful styling, limiting flexibility and increasing maintenance dependency.

How to apply hand tied weft hair extensions?

It is recommended to use sew in weft or micro beads to install hand-tied weft.

Sew in Weft:

1. Creating a Braid or Weft Base
Braid the natural hair: Create a tight, horizontal cornrow braid close to the scalp (acts as an anchor for the weft).
Use a thread base: Alternatively, sew a durable thread (e.g., nylon or cotton) horizontally across the section using a needle, creating a "weft track" to attach extensions.
2. Attaching the Sew-in Weft
Place the hand-tied weft extension parallel to the braid or thread track.Using a curved needle and matching thread, sew the weft to the braid/track by passing the needle through the weft’s base and the braid/thread in a backstitch or whipstitch pattern.
Ensure the weft is tightly secured but not overly tense to avoid scalp discomfort. Adding Multiple Layers. Repeat the process for additional layers

Using Micro Beads:

1. Creating Hair Bundles
Take a small section of natural hair (1/8–1/4 inch thick) and pull it through a micro bead ring using a threading tool (e.g., crochet hook or needle). The micro bead (typically made of metal or silicone) should sit close to the scalp but not pinch the skin.
2. Attaching the Weft to Micro Beads
Align the weft’s base (where hairs are tied) with the row of micro beads. For each micro bead, fold a small portion of the weft’s base over the bead, then use pliers to crimp the bead shut. This secures the weft directly to the natural hair.
Ensure the weft is parallel to the scalp and the beads are crimped firmly but not too tightly to avoid hair breakage.Repeat the process for additional rows.

Hand tied vs machine weft

hand tied vs machine weft

Hand-tied weft: Much thinner, larger and lighter than typical weft. This "thinnest" lets the hair lay flatter against your head, giving a more natural look. The hand tied is smaller along the seam line and therefore makes for a more petite, flatter fit on the head. Each weft is made by hand, small strands at a time. Hand-tied weft (including the thread) cannot be cut. Once cut, the hair will fall off easily. Suitable for people with fine hair.
Machine weft: Thicker wefts that come in one long row, and are cut to the clients head shape. Ideal for clients that are medium to thick in texture.  A machine tied weft can still be used in any“weft method”of your choosing.
